As flash loans provide instant access to large liquidity, malicious actors have used them to manipulate markets, exploit vulnerabilities in smart contracts, and drain funds from protocols.

A typical flash loan attack might involve manipulating token prices through oracle manipulation. If a DeFi protocol relies on a single price feed, an attacker can use a flash loan to artificially inflate or deflate prices, then exploit the mispricing to drain funds. The infamous bZx attacks in February 2020 demonstrated how flash loans could be weaponized, resulting in losses of approximately $355,000 in the first incident (this attack centered on the manipulation of bZx’s pricing oracle) and 2,388 ETH (worth $630,000 at the time) in the second flash loan attack just a few days later.

Smart contract vulnerabilities also present risks. Reentrancy attacks, logic flaws, and poorly designed integration points have allowed malicious actors to steal millions using flash loans as the funding mechanism.
