The Nervos Network

The Nervos Network is an open source project and collection of protocols and public blockchain ecosystem solving the biggest challenges facing blockchains like Bitcoin and Ethereum today.

A core design principle at Nervos is that layer 2 solutions such as side-chains, plasma chains and state channels are the best way to scale a blockchain system. Rather than comprising the decentralization and security of the base layer through largely untested and novel consensus mechanisms in order to achieve high performance and TPS, we utilize layer 2 solutions that bring nearly unlimited transaction capabilities and minimal transaction cost to a layer 1 blockchain that's designed to be secure, permissionless and decentralized. This in our opinion is the only way to solve the scalability trilemma.

The Nervos Network is a decentralized application network with a layered architecture. The CKB (Common Knowledge Base) is a public blockchain protocol which is the foundational layer of the Nervos Network and designed to serve as the trust engine of the whole ecosystem. Aligned with Nervos’s goal of building a layered architecture, CKB is the layer that stores assets and provides arbitration for all the upper-level layers and allows the deployment of limitless possibilities for the configurations of different Layer 2 protocols.


Unlimited Scalability

Layer 2 technologies have experienced significant growth in innovation over the last years. By leveraging the security of a permissionless blockchain, there are limitless possibilities for the configurations of different (and awesome) Layer 2 protocols and networks addressing a wide variety of use cases.


Because most transactions between two or more parties don't need to be known by every node in the network until they are securely settled, Layer 2 solutions can maximize use of the certainty provided by a public blockchain to scale the usefulness of blockchain applications.

Free Transactions at Light-speed

The Nervos Network scales by offloading most of the work to upper layers, with fees only paid when transactions are settled on the Common Knowledge Base (CKB). Processing transactions off-chain brings lower latency, higher privacy and a better user experience for all users.


While the CKB offers the broadest and most secure consensus in the Nervos Network, blockchains on the generation layer (Layer 2) can use different consensus algorithms. This approach allows for more novel blockchain applications, while still maintaining the core values of decentralization and security.

Axon - Layer 2 Design

Axon is a layer 2 side-chain of the Nervos CKB developed by the core Nervos Team. It provides a high performance smart contract execution environment and utilizes the CKB "trust layer" to facilitate a range of low cost and high performance applications.

Axon is a high performance blockchain kernel. It provides a plugin framework to developers to build a user-defined blockchain. By default, Axon provides BFT/dBFT/POA consensus modules, Ethereum VM/RISC-V VM modules and other substitutable kernel modules. Developers will also be able to program their own kernel modules.

Users can lock their digital assets on CKB and relay the proof to Axon side-chains. Users enjoy low cost and high performance with full smart contract capabilities. Users can destroy assets on Axon, relay the proof to CKB, and claim assets on CKB.

Axon will be open source and free to use for projects and developers to launch their own customizable blockchains while choosing to leverage the various features of the Layer 1 Common Knowledge Base.
