Hashing it Out: Your Questions Answered

NervosNews

Having launched our new and improved Hashing it Out series this month, we wanted to provide an opportunity for people to ask questions and get them answered. We received some really great questions from the community, and these were answered by co-founder Kevin, and Senior Software Engineer Jordan in April’s episode – which you can listen to here!

With some big updates mentioned in the show, such as the Layer 1 Upgrade and the V1 of our Layer 2, many of the questions focused around these topics. People wanted to know how the upgrade will improve things, as well as how Nervos handles so many major projects at the same time.

We have summarized the community questions and answers from Kevin and Jordan in the points below, but for a recap of the main part of the episode, you can read it here.

  1. How will the upcoming upgrade improve performance on Layer 1?
  • On Layer 1 there are a bunch of upgrades that improve the performance of the CKB node at the lowest level and execution. Essentially, it will be able to do more things, with fewer cycles which means making execution faster.
  • From a user perspective, you won’t notice much immediate improvement, as we still have capacity on the node. But, when we have more dApps and traffic, our previously ceiling will then be much higher and its setup with the upgrade so you won’t notice any slow down in dApp performance while running smoothly at scale.
  1. What ways can Nervos ensure the pioneering generation of dApps on L2 are good enough to inspire trust in the community?
  • As we work with projects and the early teams to help them launch they learn and we learn what difficulties they have. Through that experience, we improve our guidelines and best practices to ensure better experiences for their users while also resolving technical issues commonly found when launching.
  • There will be a lot more projects coming, and we will try our best to work with them to evolve and grow each of their projects with specific guidance as needed. Each dApp has unique needs and we are prepared to help them meet those difficult early challenges when just starting to grow their own communities.
  1. What will projects on Layer 1 benefit from with the Layer 1 upgrade.
  • The hard fork upgrade is bringing in new features, and more improvements to the future – everything supported on Layer 1 will continue, but they are adding new features that can only be accessed by upgrading.
  • In the future, dApps will get more complex and with these new features they will become more efficient and secure with these upgrades.
  • For example, the Exec Call – it allows us to change after the Lego building block future, so eventually we will have modular pieces that can be put into a chain that can form an entire smart contract. It is a smart contract that is broken into these legos that are stacking, and each of these modules can be audited and fully tested which means less work for the  developers, and the better the experience they will have.
  • As more modules start coming out, things will happen faster. Ethereum is similar to copy-paste of code, but everytime you modify it, there are potential for bugs. On Nervos it is a template based system so you compile and upload and then everyone uses that piece unmodified – these are tested unmodified pieces that can be used in additional smart contracts in the future there by saving time and building upon previous best work practices.
  1. Your team seems to have a lot going on a Major Upgrade to the L1, a new Layer 2 upgrade, Cardano bridge, Axon, Payment channels and bridges – how is this all being managed, it’s a lot for one team
  • Some of the new community members may not be aware that we are a pretty big team, and we have multiple teams working on all these improvements.
  • From engineering, we have a Layer 1 team, focused on CKB – they have been working for months on the upgrade.
  • We have a Layer 2 team, and they bring specific skills within this realm and are diligently working on the upgrade.
  • Then the Cardano bridge also has external teams that are working to bring it it launching.
  • Axon has its own teams and they are working together to bring this new Layer 2 to market later this year.

More to come

As mentioned, Hashing it Out is now a monthly in-depth and engaging program that will be broadcast on YouTube. We will still have smaller, ad hoc talks and updates on Twitter Spaces when there is more immediate news we want to share and discuss in a more brief format.

But, if you are looking for the big updates, thoughts from our team, as well as answers to your burning questions on the latest updates– keep an eye out at the end of each month for the next episode!
